Social listening plays a big role in the modern marketing world. By listening to what others are saying about your company or product, you can gather opinions of your audience, monitor brand reputation and keep up with competitors. Success is contingent upon how you choose to utilize your social space. In just three steps, here’s how social media monitoring can strengthen your marketing strategy.

1. Learn Opinions. According to a recent student by Search Engine Land, 88 percent of consumers trust online reviews as much as personal recommendations, meaning people often go directly to Twitter, Facebook and other social media platforms before making a purchasing decision. That being said, find which social media network your consumers are most active in, listen and engage. Consumers will ask friends, read reviews and do whatever it takes to find the feedback they need, so capitalize on this! By obtaining customers’ immediate feedback, you can create an effective social media plan by integrating their opinions into your marketing strategy.

2. Monitor Brand Reputation. By actively monitoring, companies can avoid potentially damaging exchanges that can bring negative publicity to a brand. Ensure you’re providing an outlet for your customers’ feedback, both positive and negative. Websites such as Hubspot, Hootsuite and Tweetdeck offer great social listening platforms. Note: It’s important to engage with customers in order to build a successful presence, but only to a certain point. There are opinions out there that can’t be swayed and not all comments will be based on fact—be able to recognize these and know when to take a step back. Any exchanges that could be portrayed as arguing or being hostile to a customer could cause a lot of damage to your brand.

3. Keep Up with Competitors. Social listening can also keep you in line with what the market demands. Monitoring your social media platforms in regards to your specific brand is important, but learning what other customers like or dislike about your competitor’s products can help you differentiate yours. What features do customers love? What do they wish was accessible that isn’t? Finding the answers to these questions through social listening will point your company in the right direction towards improvement.

So there you have it! Social listening is a key way to optimize your marketing strategy. Make social media marketing work for you by learning the ins and outs of a brand through the eyes of a customer, giving your company the opportunity to implement new strategies that will raise your brand to its highest potential!
